Two Methods, One Purpose

Somaspace offers two methods: Classical Pilates and the GYROTONIC Expansion System®. They are not the same. They do not overlap within a session. Each is a complete, self-contained method with its own apparatus, its own principles and its own results.

We teach them separately because they deserve to be taught that way.

Classical Pilates in the lineage of Romana Kryzanowska

Classical Pilates is the system Joseph Pilates developed in the early 20th century. It is repertoire-based: the exercises have a specific order, a specific purpose and specific standards for execution. The equipment — Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Barrels and auxiliary apparatus — was designed by Pilates himself to build uniform strength and flexibility across the entire body.

Most Pilates taught today is a fragment of this. Contemporary studios mix, modify and rebrand. Classical studios don't.

Our instructors are certified through the lineage of Romana Kryzanowska, protégée of Joseph Pilates. That lineage is direct and verifiable. The standards are exacting and the system is taught whole.

The Gyrotonic Expansion System

The Gyrotonic Expansion System was developed by Juliu Horvath and encompasses two related but distinct practices.

The GYROTONIC® method is practiced primarily on the pulley tower and GYROTONER®. GYROKINESIS® is practiced on a stool, standing and on the mat, and on specialized apparatus including the Jumping Stretching Board, ARCHWAY® and Leg Extension Unit. Somaspace holds the complete suite of Gyrotonic Expansion System equipment.

Both practices work through spiraling, three-dimensional movement patterns that decompress the spine, restore range of motion and build deep internal strength through breath-driven sequences.

The Gyrotonic method is trademarked and taught through one standardized training process worldwide. Reaching Master Trainer level takes years of supervised practice, formal examination and ongoing certification. Amanda Vernor is a GYROKINESIS® Master Trainer, one of only two in Texas.

Why our clients practice both

Many Somaspace clients attend sessions in both methods each week. Not because the methods are blended. Because each asks something different of the body and delivers something the other does not.

Classical Pilates builds structural integrity from the inside out. The Gyrotonic Expansion System restores the spiraling, three-dimensional movement that daily life compresses away.

Over time, the results compound. Not because we mix the work. Because each is doing its complete work.

Where to start

If you are new to Somaspace, three private sessions in one method is the right beginning. That gives you time to find your footing without dividing your attention. Most new clients start with Classical Pilates. Some arrive already curious about the Gyrotonic method and begin there.

Either way, you can always add the other.
