Coordinate movement, breath and mental focus

The GYROTONIC® Expansion System at Somaspace is led by Amanda Vernor, a GYROKINESIS® Master Trainer. This means that when you practice here, you are working in an environment of full integrity. The Gyrotonic method is a complete system designed to build deep internal strength, flexibility, and coordination through breath-guided exercise.

This method is lesser known because it’s trademarked and fiercely protected.

And those who experience it understand why.

About the Gyrotonic Method

The GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® methods were both developed by Juliu Horvath, a professional dancer who sought movement that would help him heal from injury and recover his strength and agility. What he created became two distinct practices, related in origin and philosophy but different in form.

The Gyrotonic method is practiced on custom-designed apparatus: pulley towers and specialized equipment that supports and guides the body through spiraling, three-dimensional movement patterns. The equipment, much of which Horvath originally built by hand from wood, allows for a range of resistance and support that makes the work accessible to every body while remaining deeply challenging for advanced practitioners.

The Gyrokinesis method is practiced on a mat and stool — no equipment. It is a complete, standalone practice in its own right, not a floor-based variation of the Gyrotonic work. Sequences move through the spine in all directions, addressing the joints, the nervous system, and the breath in a way that is unlike any other mat-based practice.

What to expect

Both the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methods build strength, flexibility, coordination, and agility through continuous, breath-driven movement. Because the sequences are circular and spiraling rather than linear, joints move through their natural range of motion without compression or jarring. The result is a body that becomes more capable, more mobile, and more at ease… not just during sessions, but in everything you do.

With regular practice, strength and mobility develop together, not at the expense of each other. The nervous system becomes calmer and more responsive. Coordination improves in ways that transfer directly to athletic performance, dance, and everyday movement. Chronic tension, particularly in the spine, releases in ways that other methods rarely achieve.

Both practices are appropriate for all levels of fitness and experience, from people managing injury or limited mobility to professional athletes and dancers. The method meets the body where it is. That is part of what makes the depth of instruction here matter. A Master Trainer oversees client programming to ensure sessions are progressive while rooted in the method’s integrity.

Taught at the highest level

Amanda Vernor has practiced the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methods for over two decades.

Being a GYROKINESIS® Master Trainer represents one of the highest levels in the organization, and this responsibility shapes every aspect of how instruction is delivered at Somaspace: the sequencing of sessions, the precision of correction, the ability to adapt the work to any body without compromising the method's integrity.

Somaspace is also home to GYROTONIC® Austin Central and hosts professional education courses throughout the year.
